One of the things I really love about the bush, are the stories you hear around the camp fires and the fables and beliefs that you get to hear from the locals.
And one of these fables is about the magnificent Baobab tree, whose branches look more like roots.
I was on a walk with my African tracker one day when we came upon a truly magnificent specimen of this tree, which he pointed out with his walking stick.
“Do you know why the tree looks like that?” he asked.
“It is because when God gave all the animals a tree to plant, he gave the Baobab to the hyena. But because the hyena is so stupid he planted it upside down”.
Now I can never look at these trees without seeing his smiling wizened face.
